As a teacher I have recognized that writing is judged effectively when it is appropriate to audience, purpose and occasion. Innovative classroom have come to provide practice in addressing a range of rhetorical context and composing challenges. but i also was going about it the wrong way; I was going about it without interest and purpose.
As we entered this writing course i realized that there was more depth to teaching students to writing purposefully. There are many strategies and techniques to foster the love of writing and students writing purposefully. I have learnt that there are many trends/styles of teaching writing such as Peer Assistance, which is peering my strongest student with a weaker students. This will allow them to learn from each other and capitalize on their strengths. Teaching writing explicitly can be done through the implementation of the Gradual Release of Response mode. this refers to a particular style of teaching which is structured method of pedagogy framed around a process devolving responsibility with the learning process from the teacher to the eventual independence of the learner.
My goal is to implement these techniques in various ways such as through games, dramatic presentation, mini lessons for things that students struggle with, drawing as an alternative, displaying students work by publishing this in turn will allow students to foster appreciation and build their confidence as writers, also assign topic student can relate to; when student can write about the experience the become more motivate as writer. But with everything there are challenges that we must encounter.
Someone once said challenges are what makes life interesting and overcoming them is what makes it meaningful. The challenges that will be encountered when teaching writing may range from 1. writers will be required to simultaneously coordination of variety of skills, 2. student need to have different types of knowledge in order to write on a particular topic and 3. writing is a decontextualized task, writing has no voice. With this students must know how to bring out pitch and juncture and when to stress in their writing. With these techniques writing can and will become more purposeful and intentional in my students.

Writing is an exploration you start from nothing and learn as you go. E.L. Doctorrow
Hello Renee, this reflection is truth to what i too have learnt and is planning to do when i return to the classroom, beginning in January. As educators, we must give our students all the opportunities necessary for them to become prolific and proficient writers, i really learnt a lot in this unit and i am hoping that once we pledge to provide them with these opportunities then they will in essence become successful
ReplyDeleteHi Renee, This is very true and as educators we need to ensure that we do our best to guide our students where necessary, impart the knowledge we now possess and encourage them to be better themselves. Writing is an art and we have to hand our students the brushes and the paint in order to help them begin the process.
